MYRTLE BEACH

N.C. woman charged with hitting officer

Myrtle Beach police arrested a Jacksonville, N.C., woman after she punched a police officer in the face while he was arresting one of her acquaintances for public intoxication.

According to a Myrtle Beach police report, officers responded to a taxicab driver who had called because passengers had left his cab after vomiting in the back seat and had tried to skip out on the fare. When the officer arrived about 1 a.m. Sunday morning at the intersection of U.S. 17 Bypass and Mr. Joe White Avenue, he found an intoxicated man stumbling around the Bojangles parking lot.

According to the report, the officer tried to stabilize the man and arrest him for public intoxication, when he was punched in the face below his right eye by Regina Daughtry.

When he continued to place the handcuffs on the man, he said the woman punched him in the chest and continued to flail her arms at him. After securing the man, the officer tried to arrest the woman for assault, but she dropped to the ground and began rolling around to avoid the handcuffs. The officer called for back up and according to the report, Daughtry relaxed enough to be handcuffed.

The officer talked to the cabdriver, who said a third sober passenger came back to pay the fare. Daughtry was charged with resisting arrest, interfering with official police business, assault on a police officer and public intoxication.
