Carolina League loses to California League in All-Star game

Pelicans snag all-star game

In the immediate aftermath of acquiring the Myrtle Beach Pelicans, managing partner Chuck Greenberg was asked if, at some point, the team wanted the opportunity to host the annual All-Star Game between the Carolina League and the California League.

"Absolutely," Greenberg said. "That's something we very much want to do."

It sure didn't take very long.

Pelicans announce 2010 home schedule

The Myrtle Beach Pelicans announced their 2010 home schedule on Thursday, with a Fourth of July contest and the California-Carolina League All-Star Game highlighting the slate.

The Pelicans play host to the all-star game June 22, with festivities kicking off the day before. Then in July, Myrtle Beach will host Salem on Independence Day.

The Pelicans' home opener will be against the Wilmington Blue Rocks on April 8.

Pelicans GM Johnson earns Carolina League honor

MYRTLE BEACH| Myrtle Beach Pelicans general manager North Johnson has been awarded the Carolina League's 2008 Calvin Falwell Award as the league's top executive. The award marks the fourth time Johnson, 50, has been honored by league owners, general managers and managers.

Johnson, who joined the Pelicans as general manager before the 2007 season, was also honored as the Carolina League's Executive of the Year three times during a 17-year tenure as general manager of the Kinston Indians (1988, 1994, 2000). This past season marked the 30th in baseball for Johnson.

The Pelicans swept the Carolina League's three postseason awards with Rocket Wheeler earning Manager of the Year and Chris ``Butter'' Ball getting the Sports Turf Manager of the Year for a third consecutive season.

Hurricanes assign D Harrison to AHL affiliate

The Carolina Hurricanes have assigned defenseman Jay Harrison to their American Hockey League affiliate in Albany.

The 27-year-old Harrison had played in 10 of the team's 13 games this year, tallying a goal and two assists. The Hurricanes signed Harrison as a free agent in July.
