Area briefs: Coastal's women lose to VMI

CHARLESTON -- Fourth-seeded Coastal Carolina tied fifth-seeded VMI 1-1 before falling in penalty kicks 5-3 in the first game of the Big South Women's Soccer at Blackbaud .

With the win, VMI (7-10-2) advances today's semifinals, while Coastal (7-13-3) saw its season come to an end.

Chrissy Beach scored in the seventh minute to give the Keydets a 1-0 lead. Coastal would answer in the 48th minute when Maegen Hellberg scored to tie it.

The match remained tie before going to penalty kick, where VMI was a perfect 5-for-5 in pulling out the victory.

College volleyball

Coastal Carolina senior Jill Nyhof was named to the ESPN the Magazine First Team Academic All-District squad for the third time.

On the court, Nyhof ranks 20th in the NCAA in blocks per set with 1.35, and ranked fifth in Coastal history with 1,247 blocks.

High school volleyball

Bishop England 3, (at) Waccamaw 0 | The Bishops topped the Warriors in three games (25-12, 25-5, 25-12) in the Lower State final to advance to the state championship, ending the most prolific season in Waccamaw history.

The loss snapped the Warriors' 13-game winning streak in a season in which Waccamaw made its deepest playoff run.
