THE LOWDOWN | his week we hit The Pub, formerly known as the Pub and Grub, for happy hour. The bar, on the southern edge of Socastee, is suited for various ages, and it's a big hit on Sundays, when NASCAR fans flock in for caution prizes.
Don't be fooled by the strip mall exterior…the bar is deceptively big. The 3,000-square-foot locale includes tables, a large wrap-around bar in the back and high-top wooden tables great for sitting or standing. Each has its own TV, and a handful of big screen TVs are spread throughout the bar. The walls are painted Chanticleer green, and the pub has an open feel to it, with high ceilings that helps cut down on hovering smoke, and there are clean bathrooms in the back for the tomcats and pussycats.
The Pub has been under new ownership for about six months, and during our visit, the owner was seen chatting with anyone and everyone who comes in. He occasionally sets out free food, and we hit a lucky day when he provided chips and tasty homemade queso dip. Menu items are all less than $10, and most are less than $5.
The Pub has a plethora of bar games, including pool tables, darts, Golden Tee, Silver Strike, Megatouch and horseshoe pits outside. There's also a large seating area outside.
The Pub has live music during happy hour on Wednesdays and Thursdays.
Happy Hour deals, from 4 p.m. – 8 p.m. Monday through Friday, include $2 domestic beers and house drinks. However, the daily specials are just as good as happy hour specials. The Pub serves $1 Jello shots and $2.50 Newcastle bottles all day every day. On Wednesdays you can get $10 buckets of domestic beer.
TIPS | The Pub also features live music from local artists every Friday and Saturday night.
