LOWDOWN | If you're looking for a local casual bar where you can get harpooned for 15 bucks...then The Whale in Murrells Inlet is your spot. That's where we hit for this week's happy hour.
The Whale is a neighborhood pub decorated like our neighboring ocean. It has a blue wall with whales and sea creatures depicted, and the other walls are wooden, similar to those of a log cabin. On any given night, the crowd is a mixture of locals, young and old. The atmosphere is chill and laidback, and there's a patio out back complete with tables, rocking chairs and a fire place.
The beer is kept on ice, and you can buy your own coozie to keep your beer frigid if you don't drink fast enough for it to stay cold. Bar games include darts, pool, Megatouch and Silver Strike, plus you can test your knowledge on Trivia Night from 6-9 p.m. Thursdays, and you can test your vocal cords - The Whale has karaoke on Wednesdays and weekends. The Whale also has the NFL TV package, and Sundays also bring in plenty of NASCAR race fans.
If you're hungry, The Whale boasts that it has the best food in Murrells Inlet for the cheapest price...everything is made from scratch. A bartender says even the grilled cheese melts in her mouth. The menu has a plethora of items to choose from, including peel-and eat-shrimp, grouper bites, salads, sandwiches and West Virginia chili.
Happy hour runs everyday from 4-7 p.m. You can cash in on $2 domestic bottles, $2.50 import bottles and $3 well drinks during happy hour. Canned beer is always $1.75 and there's a daily drink special for $2.50.
