A Coastal Carolina football player was charged overnight with driving under the influence.
Austin Shirley, 22, was booked into J. Reuben Long Detention Center at 3:16 a.m., jail records show. He remains jailed and will have a bond hearing this morning.
He was arrested by Conway police, though details of the arrest were not immediately available.
Shirley, a redshirt senior from Greenwood, is a reserve inside linebacker for the Chanticleers. He has played in three games this season, making two tackles, including one for loss.
Coastal honored Shirley along with the rest of his classmates during senior day festivities before last Saturday's home finale against Presbyterian. Since he isn't likely to see playing time at linebacker, it is unclear whether Shirley, a transfer from Piedmont Technical College, was slated to travel with the team for this Saturday's season finale at Charleston Southern.
