SURFSIDE BEACH -- Pro golf

Pawleys Island's Jeremy Pope and Murrells Inlet's Zack Byrd both failed Saturday to advance to the third stage of PGA Tour Qualifying.

Pope shot a 2-over 73 at Hombre Golf Club in Panama City, Fla., to finish tied for 39th at 3-over 287 after the final round of the second stage of Q-School. Byrd shot an even-par 72 at Callaway Gardens Mountain View Course in Pine Mountain, Ga., to finish tied for 61st at even-par 288.

The top 20 players and ties advanced to the third round.

Former Myrtle Beach resident Kris Blanks advanced to the third stage after firing a final-round even-par 71 to finish tied for 12th at 4-under 280 at Hombre. Bishopville's Tommy Gainey also advanced, shooting a final-round 2-under 69 to finish tied for fourth at 10-under 274 at Craig Ranch in McKinney, Texas.

High school girls tennis

Myrtle Beach's Jordan Lazarus defeated Wren's Ashton Lee 6-0, 6-4, then teamed with Beaufort's Sam Sullivan to knock off Avery Owens of Clinton and Sarah Seigler of Emerald 8-7 (7-4) in doubles to help the South to a 7-2 win over the North on Saturday in North-South All-Star Tennis Classic at Prestwick Golf and Tennis Club.

The event matches the top six seniors from the Lower State against the top six from the Upper State in singles and doubles matches.

Savannah Poskevich (Dorman) def. Rachel Gaster (Johnsonville) 6-3, 4-6 (10-7).
