The Sandwich Club Cafe and Deli

- for Weekly Surge

Setting the table

Are you tired of ordering a sandwich at a so-called "deli" and getting a less than average meal that you could have easily made yourself? I know this feeling and have found the perfect solution: The Sandwich Club Café and Deli. This is a real deli that serves Boar's Head brand cold cuts and all-lump Maryland-style crab cakes, which are very popular.

Located in the Food Lion shopping center next to Coastal Carolina University, the Sandwich Club is set up with dark green booths on the inside and all-black tables on the outside. In the back there are a few extra tables and chairs for anyone who prefers a chair to a booth. The deli isn't the fanciest place in the world and that isn't its purpose. It's a family restaurant that only has one goal: To serve the highest quality food available. The Salins family wants its customers to always be satisfied.

The Sandwich Club is set up like a classic deli: When you order a meal, depending on the number of customers, you either stand in line or walk right up to the counter to order your meal from the menu posted on the wall behind the counter. After you order, you wait at a booth or table for your name to be called.

Down the hatch

The deli serves both breakfast and lunch; I chose lunch. Breakfast is served Monday thru Friday from 7:30 a.m. until 11 a.m. On Saturday breakfast is available from 9 a.m. until noon.

The hot-off-the-grill section of the lunch menu features chicken sandwiches, burgers, chicken and tuna melts, Philly cheese steaks and chicken Philly cheese steaks. The cold sandwich section of the menu has sandwiches with a variety of deli meat. Also, there is a veggie wrap featuring romaine lettuce, tomato, onion, carrots, green peppers, cucumbers, mushrooms, ranch or Italian dressing. There are seven different salads on the menu - a garden salad, a chef salad, a side salad, chicken Caesar salad, and tuna, chicken or shrimp salad served over a bed of lettuce. The low-carb section of the menu includes grilled chicken, hamburgers, turkey and Philly steak. And of course there is the all-lump Maryland crab cake. The breakfast menu offers all your traditional breakfast meals, including breakfast sandwiches.

I was in the mood for a cold cut sandwich and decided to go with "The Sandwich Club" - ham, turkey, bacon, lettuce, tomato, cheese and mayonnaise on white or wheat bread. The sandwich was absolutely delicious. The meat was sliced perfectly thin and was bursting with flavor.

Check, Please

The Sandwich Club Café and Deli is the place to go for a great meal in a friendly atmosphere. The prices are very reasonable. My sandwich cost $5.95; I added a drink and fries for an extra $2.50. I would recommend this restaurant to anybody looking to satisfy a sandwich fix; you will not be disappointed.

The Sandwich Club Café and Deli is located at 2270 U.S. 501 in Conway. Hours of operation are 7:30 a.m. to 3:45 p.m. Monday through Friday, and 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturdays; closed on Sundays. For more information, visit www.thesandwich clubcafe.com or call 347-0035.
