The old General Aviation terminal building behind The Market Common was torn down Monday, about four months after the original tear-down date was scheduled.

The Horry County Department of Airports ran into some difficulty with the old building because of a contractor's failure to fully survey the amount of asbestos in the building.

The new terminal building was built about 50 yards away closer to the runway on the same property, and staff was moved to the new facility in November.

The spot of the old building will be paved to make a new parking lot for the terminal.

The county went to court over the asbestos issues, which drove up the original contractor's price.

While waiting for the court issues to be cleared up, the department decided to hire a new contractor to take care of the asbestos disposal and then tear down the building within the project's budget and using some contingency funds.
