Beach Ball teams succesful on home turf

John Rhodes' duties as mayor did not hamper with the quality of the most recent Beach Ball Classic.

Of the 16 teams in the field, 10 advanced to the final four of their respective postseason tournaments, nine played in a championship game and five teams - Galena (Nev.), Pinewood Prep, Wilson, Scott County (Ky.), Arlington Country Day (Fla.) - took home state championship honors.

The following is a run down of how each of the 2006 Beach Ball Classic teams concluded their seasons after leaving the Grand Strand in December:

Arlington Country Day won its third straight Florida Class 2A title, defeating Port St. Joe, 72-43, on March 3.

Bishop O'Connell lost to Benedictine, 61-58, in the Virginia Independent Schools state final.

Chaminade Madonna (Fla.) lost to Gulliver Prep 67-54 in the regionals of Florida's Class 3A tournament Feb. 20.

Father Henry Carr (Ontario, Canada) beat Sir John A MacDonald 55-48 in the Quad-A bronze medal game March 24.

Galena defeated Mojave in the Nevada Class 4A state championship game, 54-41 on Feb. 23.

Latta lost in the first round of the South Carolina Class A state tournament to Scott's Branch.

Miami Senior lost to Miami Springs in the Florida Class 6A state tournament.

Mount St. Joseph lost to Towson Catholic in the Baltimore Catholic League championship game, 70-53, on Feb. 28.

Myrtle Beach lost in the first round of the South Carolina Class AAA bracket to Lake Marion.

Pennsbury (Pa.) lost to Harrisburg 63-61 in the second round of the Pennsylvania Class AAAA tournament on March 14.

Summerville's Pinewood Prep (27-4) defeated Columbia's Hammond School 59-53 for the South Carolina Independent School's championship.

St. Edward lost to Cincinnati Archbishop Moeller, the eventual state champion, March 23 in the Division I semifinals. St. Edward was 26-0 entering the game and was ranked No. 1 in the Ohio Associated Press poll.

St. John's lost to 2005 Beach Ball champ DeMatha 76-62 on Feb. 27 in the WCAC championship game.

Scott County defeated Ballard 56-50 in Kentucky's state title game March 24.

Socastee lost to Timberland in the second round of the Class AAA playoffs.

Wilson (23-6) defeated Greenville 67-50 in the South Carolina Class AAA state final. Wilson also beat North Myrtle Beach and Georgetown in the tournament. The Tigers were a No. 3 seed.
