National Hockey League Game Capsules

Yann Danis, making his second start of the season for New Jersey, finished with 23 saves against his former team, as the Devils edged the New York Islanders, 2-1, in an Atlantic Division battle at Prudential Center. Cory Murphy and Brian Rolston lit the lamp for the Devils, who have won four straight and welcomed Patrik Elias back to the lineup. Elias, the franchise's all-time leading scorer, missed the first 13 games of the 2009-10 campaign while recovering from offseason groin surgery. Frans Nielsen provided the lone goal for the Islanders, who have dropped two straight on the heels of a four-game win streak. Martin Biron stopped 29 of the 31 shots he faced in defeat.

Raleigh, NC (Sports Network) - Jason Blake's goal late in the third period lifted the Toronto Maple Leafs to a 3-2 win and extended Carolina's losing streak to 11 games. Nikolai Kulemin and John Mitchell each had a goal while Jonas Gustavsson made 34 saves for the Maple Leafs, who won for just the second time in 14 games this season. Sergei Samsonov and Brandon Sutter each had a goal while Cam Ward made 23 saves in the loss for the Hurricanes, who are suffering through the longest losing streak in franchise history.

Final Score: Philadelphia 5, Buffalo 2

Buffalo, NY (Sports Network) - Ray Emery made 28 saves to help the Philadelphia Flyers take a 5-2 win over the Buffalo Sabres at HSBC Arena. Daniel Carcillo scored twice while Chris Pronger had a goal and an assist for the Flyers, who have won three straight. James van Riemsdyk and Darroll Powe each lit the lamp in the game. Derek Roy had a goal and an assist while Tyler Myers also had a goal for the Sabres, who had won five of six coming into the contest. Ryan Miller was charged with four goals on 36 shots in the loss.

Final Score: Washington 4, Florida 1

Sunrise, FL (Sports Network) - Brian Pothier scored a power-play goal and collected two assists, as the Washington Capitals defeated the Florida Panthers, 4-1, in the front end of a home-and-home series at BankAtlantic Center. Brendan Morrison tallied twice and Tyler Sloan also found the back of the net for the Capitals, who snapped a three-game losing streak. Jose Theodore made 28 saves in the win. Washington played its second straight game without the services of superstar Alex Ovechkin, who suffered an upper- body strain in Sunday's overtime loss to Columbus. He will also miss Saturday's game at Verizon Center against the Panthers. His status will be updated early next week. Nathan Horton scored the lone goal for Florida, which had won three straight. Tomas Vokoun, who had posted back-to-back shutouts in his previous two starts, stopped 21-of-24 shots in defeat.
