Electrical engineer wins women's race at Myrtle Beach Marathon

For 25 miles it looked as though 2004 Myrtle Beach Marathon winner and present Coastal Carolina University professor Christine Rockey would claim her second Women's Open Marathon title of the decade.

However, at mile marker 25, Elizabeth Whiting put together her strongest finish of her young running career to claim her first marathon title finishing in 2:56:12.

``I didn't even see [Rockey] until mile 20,'' said Whiting a 26-year old electrical engineer from Marquette, Mich.

``Wow. I just can't believe the support I received. I had an awesome group of guys that I ran with helping me keep pace and this was the first race I've actually had a strong finish.''
