Merryman wins national award

Anna Merryman, a former Carolina Forest High student who is now a senior at the South Carolina Governors School for Science and Mathematics was recently awarded a $2,500 scholarship by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation.

Merryman was one of three GSSM students selected from 15,000 students nationally. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Clyde Merryman of Myrtle Beach. She plans to study pre-professional health at Clemson University in the fall.

MUSIC

Choir triumphs in N.Y. contest

The Carolina Forest Show Choir won the Grand Championship in New York City. The choir scored a 99, and Kyle Berry was named best soloist.

CLUBS

FFA honored

The Future Farmers of America Carolina Forest chapter has been named one of the top nine of 90 FFA chapters in South Carolina for 2008-2009 school year out of over 90 chapters.

Each state can send their top 10 percent chapters to represent the state at the national competition held in Indianapolis in October.

ATHLETES

Soccer players make state team

The rosters for the S.C. North-South Soccer Classic features five area players.

Forward Tariku Ashenafi of Carolina Forest, midfielder Taylor Collins of North Myrtle Beach, defender Rhyne Garrity of Waccamaw and midfielder Noah Lascell of Carolina Forest were named to the boys South team. North Myrtle Beach defender Julie Ann Quigley was selected to the girls South squad.

The event, which features a boys and girls game with teams made up of the top seniors in the state, will take place on June 13 at Wofford College in Spartanburg.
