Now in its third year, Ocean Bay Elementary is proud to have the Holiday Shop open to all children at the school. While not a fundraiser for the school, last year's records show that the holiday shop made more than $3,000. The items range from coin purses to coffee mugs or jewelry that are especially for Mom or Dad, and several items for grandparents, aunts, uncles, sisters and brother of all ages. The prices range from 25 cents to $17 depending on the items.
Letters were sent home with the children for them to discuss their holiday gift purchases with their parents. Students them return with their list of family members or friends to purchase for along with a set amount to spend. Volunteers are on hand to assist those children who need help determining how much to spend per person so that they may buy for everyone on their list without going over their allotted budget.
After the gifts are purchased, they are then wrapped in special Holiday Shop bags.
The Shop also serves as a teaching tool regarding math and budgeting for a number of students.
With the economy as it is we have no idea what to expect, but if we just break even and students have had the joy of purchasing a gift for someone special then it was a success. It is a great way for children to have a chance to express their love and appreciation for others by giving during the holiday season.
