Most children spend Memorial Day at the beach or at the neighborhood pool. Not so for Carolina Forest and North Myrtle Beach students this year.

With the area's recent wildfires, the Horry County school district made this Memorial Day a make-up day for several schools in the area. Ocean Bay Elementary was one of those schools.

But just because school was in session doesn't mean it was business as usual.

The students and staff hosted what they called Memorial Day at the Bay. Instead of hitting the books, they decided to focus on Memorial Day and its meaning by inviting some special guests to their celebration.

Horry County Fire Rescue, Myrtle Beach police and Horry County police were invited to join in the celebration, at which the children gave thanks to them all for their efforts to save neighborhoods and homes during the recent wildfires.

Students, staff and parents enjoyed a picnic, with food donated by Firehouse Subs, prior to the presentations.

Students had made cards and pictures for their guests, and the third grade sang several songs for the honored heroes.

Watching the men and women reading the cards and seeing them so obviously touched by the children's gestures made the day all worth while.

There were also presentations by students who explained the true meaning of Memorial Day including Jamal McClain, Mark VanSteenburg and Faith Smith, who held photos of their fathers, who are serving overseas.

Many parents were upset with the decision to use the holiday as a make-up day. However, if you ask the students who attended, they will likely tell you they were happy to be there. More than one student didn't want to leave early when given the chance.

The make-up day that turned into Memorial Day at the Bay will likely be remembered much longer than just another day at the beach.
