Dirty Don's Oyster Bar & Grill
408 21st Ave. N., 448-4881 Hours | 11 a.m.-10 p.m. Mon-Thurs., Sun.; 11 a.m.-11 p.m. Friday, Saturday The vibe | Fishing nets, which hang from the ceiling, are a big decorating motif in this campy, fisherman-flair joint. Faux Coney Island relics line the walls, while international and foreign-language maps, along with bits of netting, lay beneath the tables' plastic coverings. The crowd | A mix of families, barflies and 20-somethings sought refuge from scattered showers, packing the small venue. Skip the tie, but please wear a shirt. Food and drink | Come for the ``Cheap Drinks'' boasted on the sign outside, not for the food. Sandwiches average $7 and entrees are $13 to $19. The raw oysters and spinach dip were pleasant, but the other tastings were uninspired - and mostly fried. Draft beer _ Bud Light _ is $1.75 at happy hour (4 to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday). Bottles are $2.50 to $3, and mixed drinks range from $4.25 to $10, with a 50-cent discount at happy hour.
Scotty's Beach Bar
15 S. Ocean Blvd., Surfside Beach 238-4444 Hours | 11 a.m.-1 a.m., daily The vibe | The view from the outdoor deck is priceless, but this is no martini-drinking, cigar-smoking, high-brow spot. The drink | Many patrons drank beer straight out of the can, but my friend and I enjoyed the standard array of bar offerings: $3 Yeungling and Heineken bottles, $4.25 house gin and $5.75 Stoli Orange vodka. Happy hour is 4-7 p.m. every day.
Overtime Sports Cafe
409 U.S. 17 S., North Myrtle Beach, 361-1514 Hours | 11 a.m.-2 a.m., daily The vibe | Overtime feels like an over-the-top man circus. There's sports memorabilia everywhere, not to mention an unbelievable amount of TV screens. If you're not a sports fan, you might want to pass this one by; if you're looking for a place to watch the big game, this should be right up your alley. Food and drink | You can get almost anything here, from seafood to Snickers pie to a bottle of Dom Perignon (seriously). We were hooked the minute we saw Blue Moon on the menu; some teriyaki and mild wings made the night even better. The sound | Sports commentary and Jock Jams.
Fat Tuesday's
1318 Celebrity Circle, Myrtle Beach, 444-3255 Hours | Noon-2 a.m., daily The vibe | The bar is located in Broadway at the Beach's Celebrity Square, a popular spot any time of year. Most of the bar's action is centered in its outdoor courtyard, which is an ideal spot for people-watching. Crowded with hard-drinking college types, seats were scarce. Burly doormen ensure no one walks out of the bar with a beverage. Food and drink | Offering slushies for the over-21 set, the menu mostly consists of frozen concoctions _ namely daiquiris of all flavors and strengths _ as well as margaritas. A range of imported and domestic beer is offered in bottles; the only thing on draft here is fruit-flavored. A small food menu is available, and features bar munchies like nachos and chicken fingers. The sound | Your basic party mix blend of rock, rap and a smattering of country.
Ape Hangers
The Vibe | Hours are 4 p.m. until 4 a.m. Monday through Friday, 11 a.m. until 2 a.m. Saturday and 4 p.m. until 2 a.m. Sunday. Set up in an old flatiron-shaped building in the heart of Five Points, downtown Myrtle Beach, this space has some history and a great view. The tall ceilings and hardwood floors make for a pleasant atmosphere with a bar upstairs and a bar facing the huge windows for people-watching. The downstaris area was renovated and has a cozy second bar including a pool table and games. Parking may be tricy as it's behind the bar.
Dead Dog Saloon
Dead Dog Saloon, located in Murrells Inlet, offers a broad menu and a nice view of the Inlet.
