MYRTLE BEACH

Two stores open at Myrtle Beach Mall

A seasonal pecan store and a year-round gift shop have opened at Myrtle Beach Mall.

Young's Plantation, a popular holiday staple at the mall, opened this week in the food court. The store sells all kinds of nuts, pies and holiday goodies. It will close Christmas Eve, said Matt Morris, the mall's spokesman.

Black Water Trading, which will be open year-round, also has opened. The store, which sells gifts, candles, antiques and other items, is near the food court, between Kay Jewelers and Claire's Boutiques.

Energy-efficient tax holiday starts today

A higher sales tax means N.C. consumers will get a larger break when they purchase energy-efficient appliances compared with a year ago.

The sales-tax holiday on so-called Energy Star appliances such as clothes washers, freezers and air conditioners starts today and runs through Sunday statewide.

Fran Preston with the N.C. Retail Merchants Association says retailers are planning special sales on the products to coincide with the holiday.

Other Energy Star items that qualify for the sales tax exemption include refrigerators, some heat pumps, ceiling fans, dehumidifiers and programmable thermostats.

Buy carefully online

"Buyer beware" is what the National Retail Federation is telling shoppers about common items on discount, auction Web sites, like eBay.

The Washington-based trade group for retailers is warning against buying products - mostly drugs and personal care products - from third-party sites because they could be stolen or tainted, and pose health risks.
