The Annual Pez in the Sun Gathering returns to Myrtle Beach next weekend for its annual convention at Springmaid Beach Resort, featuring displays and shows of the collectible candy dispensers put together by the convention attendees.
This is the ninth year the convention is being held in Myrtle Beach, and founder Richard Belyski says each time is different. Belyski, who lives year round in Surfside Beach, says this year 19 different states will be represented at the convention as well as an attendee from Israel. Also notable is that every year brings new Pez collectors.
"We always get a different group," says Belyski, "we see some of the same faces, [but] about half of the attendees are first timers."
The public is invited to come check out all the Pez attractions and displays at the Annual Pez in the Sun Gathering:
When | Nov. 5-7
Where | Springmaid Beach Resort, 3200 S. Ocean Blvd.
More info | Call 868-1739 or visit www.PezGathering.com.
This year the convention will feature a number of different Pez attractions and displays including The Largest PEZ Display Stand. The stand, which measures 8 feet long, is an interactive statue. Attendees will be encouraged to help fill the display themselves with dispensers, and an official count will be held on the final day of the convention. PEZheads will also be able to enjoy toy car shows and races, and check out displays of Pez set up in attending guests' rooms.
Beyond the fun, the Pez in the Sun Gathering and those who are a part of it have the chance to help others. The dispensers used to fill the Pez Display Stand will be shipped to Afghanistan to help bring a smile to military stationed there and offer a reminder of home. Also, a silent charity auction will be held throughout the convention and proceeds will be donated to the local chapter of the American Red Cross. Last year, the auction raises $1,800.
The Pez in the Sun Gathering offers PEZheads an opportunity to share their hobby as well as enjoy some relaxation. Belyski says that every year "a good portion [of attendees] come on vacation as well."
