Artful October on tap at Myrtle Beach Area University

Though the days of fall are fleeting, the remainder of September and October are filled with a colorful harvest of cultural activities at Coastal Carolina University to please all performing and visual art connoisseurs of all ages and preferences:

Thursday-Oct. 3. "The Spitfire Grill," performed by Coastal Carolina University Theatre at 3 and 7:30 p.m. at the Black Box Theatre, Edwards College of Humanities and Fine Arts. A musical that follows recently paroled Percy Talbott and his new job at the Spitfire Grill in Gilead, Wisc. Tickets are $10 and $15.

Friday. Fifth Annual Spectrum Concert Family Weekend, featuring CCU's bands and chamber ensembles at 7 p.m. at Wheelwright Auditorium. Tickets are $9.

Sept. 30. "Pushing the Limits," with Steve Bailey and Howard Levy, and Jeff Sipe at 7:30 p.m. at Wheelwright Auditorium. Renowned bass guitarist (and CCU professor) Bailey performs jazz with Levy, one of the original members of Bela Fleck and the Flecktones, on harmonica and piano and drummer Sipe of Aquarium Rescue Unit/Trey Anastasio fame. Tickets are $10 and $15.

Oct. 1. Fall Choral Concert, featuring the CCU Chamber and Concert Choirs, as well as the Advanced Choral Ensemble of St. James High School, at 7:30 p.m. at Wheelwright Auditorium. Admission is free.

Oct. 4. Fall Gospel Concert, featuring CCU's Coastal Inspirational Ambassadors, at 4:30 p.m. at Wheelwright Auditorium.

Oct. 12. "Winterreise," featuring faculty members Jeffrey L. Jones on vocals and Philip Powell on piano performing this composition by Schubert, at 7:30 p.m. at Wheelwright Auditorium. Tickets are $3.

Oct. 13. Flute and Guitar Duo, featuring faculty members Amy Tully on flute and Daniel Hull on guitar playing international music at 7:30 p.m. at the Recital Hall of Edwards College of Humanities and Fine Arts. Tickets are $3.

Through Oct. 16. "The Art of Drawing," an art exhibit displaying archival student drawings from Yale University and former students of Bernard Chaet 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday at the Rebecca Randall Bryan Art Gallery, Edwards College of Humanities and Fine Arts. Admission is free.

Oct. 22-Nov. 30. "Brooklyn Painters," featuring eight painters who live and work in Brooklyn, N.Y., including Marci MacGuffie's "Illuminating the Blind Spot," which has been shown at the Goff & Rosenthal Gallery in Berlin, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday at the Rebecca Randall Bryan Art Gallery, Edwards College of Humanities and Fine Arts. Admission is free.

Oct. 22-24 and 29-30. "Spring Awakening," a play performed by Coastal Carolina University Theatre that follows three teenagers who face controversial issues like suicide, abortion and homosexuality, at 7:30 p.m. at Wheelwright Auditorium. Tickets are $15.

Oct. 29. "The Music of Meira Warshauer," presented by CCU music faculty, which will celebrate this South Carolinian composer, at 7:30 p.m. in the Recital Hall of Edwards College of Humanities and Fine Arts. Tickets are $3.
