Meet your neighbor

Barbara Stephen of Loris has worked in financial services for 25 years and has traveled a lot. She plans to open Stephen Adult Day Care at the Finklea Community Center soon and plans to continue her work in insurance and mutual funds.

She has been married to Richard Stephen for 41 years, and they have a daughter, Renita Stephen. In 1968, she and her husband moved to New York so she could study IBM keypunch, and stayed to take care of her brother, who had leukemia. After he died in 1972, they moved back to the Loris area. She is active at Prince Chapel Missionary Baptist Church. She likes to watch CNN News.

I decided to open an adult day care because | I found out there are a lot of elderly and disabled people who are overlooked, and I wanted to try to do something for them.

Some of my most prized material possessions are | a stand-up "Victrol" from my granddaddy, a wood stove with a biscuit warmer from my uncle and two old irons from my mother.

Every day I | try to read a chapter in the Bible.

Something that is always in my refrigerator is | canned peaches.

One of my favorite places to visit was | New Orleans.

A celebrity I would like to meet is | Oprah.

One of the hardest things I've been through was | my mother's death.
