Fall at the beach means two things: The beach is ours again, and weekends are full of fall festivals.

Oct. 3 was the 19th annual Farm Heritage Day at Indigo Farms, just over the state line in Calabash, N.C. This is a day dedicated to the way life used to be, and of course a great way to see how life is still lived on farms all across the county.

There were demonstrations that let children get hands-on experience such as paper making, weaving, and even dyeing with indigo, which they quickly learn is a messy process.

Entertainment at Farm Heritage Day is always on hand, but the best entertainment is simply taking a look around.

Children attempting to walk on stilts can be quite entertaining, as can the hayride.

Those children who are used to Wii, Nintendo and more advanced forms of games can see how much fun a more simple way of life can be while watching the NASPIG Races, finding their way through a hay maze, or enjoying a pony ride.

Adult visitors also get a taste of farm life first hand as well. Instead of Miss Butterworth's syrup, you can get a taste of fresh made molasses and even see it being made.

Farm Heritage Day really takes you back in time. With some exhibitions, you will find yourself actually touching history. Imagine holding a gun and bayonet that were actually used by soldiers in the Civil War.

Regardless of your age, or if you have never stepped foot out of the city, Farm Heritage Day at Indigo Farms is one that you will enjoy with your family. Make sure before you leave to look through the country store, as well as the greenhouse. You will find some of the largest and most beautiful chrysanthemums you will ever see. Of course, those buildings are both open year round.

Farm Heritage Day is already being planned for next year, which will be its 20th year. Mark your calendars now for Oct. 2, 2010, and don't forget to practice your stilt-walking skills before you go.
