R ed Ribbon Week is a weeklong celebration of committing to stay drug-free. During the week, children make a lifelong commitment to remain free from underage drinking, tobacco and recreational drugs. Annually during the week, more than 80 million children and adults make a stand for a healthy and drug-free life.
At Ocean Bay Elementary during Red Ribbon Week, there was much excitement about the event. The festivities began Oct. 23 with a kick-off assembly that raised the awareness of the week's events, and escalated awareness of the importance to make this lifelong pledge.
Beginning on the following Monday, the halls and classrooms were drenched in red as students and teachers all attired themselves in red in one way or another to show their support for the cause of the week. Each day had a different theme. Tuesday's was followed by "Team Up Against Drugs," with everyone proudly wearing their favorite sport jerseys. Wednesday was deemed "Drugs Turn You Inside Out," which is when students were found with their shirts on - you guessed it - inside out. And by Thursday everyone was digging through their sock drawers in search of their craziest or mismatched socks for "Sock it to Drugs" day, which ended the week of festivities.
