On Nov. 3, we will be having an important election. Important to the future of Myrtle Beach and its residents.
We will be voting for a mayor and three members of City Council.
We need a mayor and council members who have a vision for what Myrtle Beach should look like 10 years from now.
Tourism is and will continue to be our major industry, but the permanent residents deserve to have a community that provides a variety of cultural venues.
We are justifiably proud of our Long Bay Symphony. The Theater of the Republic in Conway is always "sold out." The Franklin G. Burroughs-Simeon B. Chapin Art Museum not only showcases various exhibits, but provides a variety of programs for adults and children. A family museum is on the drawing board, and a new Rivoli Performing Arts Theater will be opening in 2011.
The Chapin Memorial Library has outgrown its space and needs to be replaced with a modern, up-to-date library.
Mayor John Rhodes has been a problem solver, not a problem creator. Adam Parness, Keith Compton and Joanne Vogelsong are newcomers to the political scene but have been active in many community projects and support the cultural arts. Randal Wallace has spent a lifetime of dedicated service to Myrtle Beach.
Let's elect a mayor and City Council members who will work together for the common good instead of engaging in personal bickering and divisiveness.
Your vote on Nov. 3 will make a difference in the quality of life for our residents and for our visitors.
