Q: My family and I will in Myrtle Beach the week of Halloween. I don't want my little one to miss trick or treating. Is there anything we can take her to in her costume? She is only 4, so it needs to be "family-friendly." Thanks!

Answered 10/08/07 13:40:35 by Dwayne McLemore

A: Most, if not all, of the malls will offer some form of trick-or-treat hours, usually around 5 to 7 or so (or until candy runs out, so get there early).

Q: My husband and I are stopping in MB for a couple days the second week of December on the way to our son's college graduation in Virginia. Anything going on that time of year or is the town shut down for winter? Thanks!

Answered 10/08/07 13:39:26 by Dwayne McLemore

A: It used to be that the Pavilion and other amusements closed down for the winter, but since they're all gone you won't have to worry about that. It's a good time of year to come if you don't plan to get in the ocean or want to get a tan. Plenty of holiday events and shows to see. Some putt-putt courses may close, but all the restaurants and almost all attractions are open.

A: There should be two here now ...

Q: I heard that there has been sharks caught off the peirs by people fishing. Has there been any recently and what is the biggest one on record.

Answered 08/10/07 15:12:34 by Dwayne McLemore

A: I don't think most piers want you to catch sharks, though they are frequent visitors around piers. The last time I went out to a pier, the fishermen kept catching baby sand sharks.

E-mail our outdoors writer Gregg Holshouser at wholshouser@sc.rr.com -- he might know more about catches and records.

Q: My family and I are coming to Myrtle Beach in August we are staying at Malibu Pointe second row condo. First time in 8 years we have not stayed ocean front. Have you heard any reviews on that new condo and also would you know how easy it would be to get to the beach from that location ?

Answered 08/10/07 15:10:03 by Dwayne McLemore

A: If you are high enough, you should still have a good view of the ocean. I haven't heard anything good or bad about it. If there isn't a public beach access, you should be able to slip in between the hotels across the street and easily get to the beach.

Q: I'll be in Myrtle Beach the week starting Aug 11,2007. Are there any local festivals going on there or the surrounding area?

Answered 08/10/07 15:05:20 by Dwayne McLemore

A: Nothing I know of that's an annual event. But there are ongoing things downtown (including fireworks) that are fun ...

Broadway at the Beach also has fireworks Tuesday nights. Barefoot Landing has fireworks on Mondays.

Q: Im visiting Myrtle Beach July 4th through the 8th. Ill be staying at the Sandcastle Resort at the Pavillion. Are there any fireworks displays i can see from my hotel or that i could walk to and see. Maybe from pier 14? Thanks.

Answered 06/26/07 22:06:47 by Dwayne McLemore

A: You can probably see the Second Avenue (North) Pier show, either from the hotel or from Pier 14 (which is 12 blocks away).

Q: I need a clergy in the Surf Side Beach area for July 3, 2007. I need a blessing of the rings on the beach. Can You give me names? Thanks

Answered 06/26/07 22:05:58 by Dwayne McLemore

A: I would try to town of Surfside Beach to see if they have some names ... 843-913-6111.

Q: When will the "official" Myrtle Beach welcome center in Aynor close? I was wondering if it will remain open through the summer.

Answered 06/26/07 22:05:07 by Dwayne McLemore

A: It's closed. It's still a visitors center, just one with more of a timeshare angle to it.

Q: My family and I will be staying at the Seamaster condo complex in Garden City in late August. Never stayed there before. Looked nice on the Dunes Realty web site. Heard anything about it? Any restaurants in that area that you would recommend?

Answered 06/26/07 22:03:06 by Dwayne McLemore

A: I haven't heard anything bad, but you should be in a relatively calm part of town. There are tons of restaurants nearby, especially in Murrells Inlet, but you can consider the Conch Cafe on the beach or Gulf Stream Cafe and Sara J's on the marsh in Garden City. Sam's Corner is a Garden City mainstay for all kinds of food, particularly hot dogs.

Q: Haven't been down for a few years.I have teenage daughters now,and was wondering,is the Magic Attic or Mother Fletchers still open and if so would you recomend these for teenagers?

Answered 06/26/07 22:01:09 by Dwayne McLemore

A: Both are closed and their buildings have been leveled. The only other teen event I know of is at the House of Blues (they hold Teen Night periodically).

Q: Hello, I come to MB from NJ several times a year, bike week, a week with the family, but this year I am also coming with only my wife for the 4th of July week. We are interested in scenic activities in and around the area as well as some nice restaurants. Anything holiday related as well would be helpfull. Any suggestions.

Answered 06/26/07 21:57:12 by Dwayne McLemore

A: Sorry for the late response. It's been a crazy few months here. ... We'll have a July Fourth events listing online no later than Friday. Look on the homepage for that. Scenic options include Conway's Riverwalk, Georgetown's Harborwalk, as well as Brookgreen Gardens and Huntington Beach State Park in Murrells Inlet.

The restaurants part is hard considering we have hundreds, if not thousands, of places to eat here. I am a fan of Lee's Inlet Kitchen and Gulf Stream Cafe on the south end, but there are so many others to choose from. Keep in mind that restaurants will be packed during the holiday week, so go early or go late or plan to wait in line.

Q: I will be coming to Myrtle Beach in June 07. I will be meeting a friend and her family there. We are looking for a place to stay together, that will accomodate 4 adults and 5 children. Ages 9, 6, 4 and 5 months. So needless to say we need a hotel with its own water park. Years ago the seamist would have been my first choice, but the last few years it has really gotten bad reviews. So I dont think I would even attempt it. Suggestions?

Answered 05/16/07 16:51:22 by Dwayne McLemore

A: The Sea Mist and the Sands Resorts are the ones that come to mind that have on-site water parks. If you look hard enough, you'll find bad reviews about every hotel in the world. The people who expect and get good service aren't usually the ones who take the time to go online and write a review.

Q: Is the Ice Castle theater still open? I can not find a web site for it, however I have read about it in a few reviews. Thank you!

Answered 05/16/07 16:48:47 by Dwayne McLemore

A: The theater that once housed "Footloose on Ice" (with Nancy Kerrigan) as well as a later "BrainFreeze - Comedy and Ice Show" has been closed about 5 years. It sits on the property of the under-construction Hard Rock theme park. The park is planning a country show on ice skates, so it's entirely possible they'll be reusing the building for that.

Q: Yeah, what's the best way to get there from Maine?

Answered 05/16/07 16:41:15 by Dwayne McLemore

A: Your local airport. Seriously, if the drive doesn't bother you, I believe you'd take I-95 all the way. I don't know the ins and outs of navigating through all the big northeastern cities, but you'll want to get off of I-95 in South Carolina. Take Exit 181-A and merge onto S.C. Highway 38 East toward Latta/Marion. Then be on the lookout for U.S. Highway 501 and signs to Myrtle Beach.
