Local cross country runners fare well at S.C. state meet

COLUMBIA -- A pair of local runners had top 10 finishes Saturday at the S.C. Cross Country State Championships. Andrews senior Migueal Omedo-Polida had the highest finish of any area runner, finishing sixth in the Class AA boys race in 17 minutes, 3.75 seconds. In the Class AA/A girls race, Waccamaw's Grace Barnett was the only area runner in the top 10, finishing in 20:32.25 to lead the Warriors to a 10th place finish.

Carolina Forest junior Zach Hensel had the fastest time of any local runner on Saturday in the S.C. Cross Country State Championships, finishing the 3.1-mile course at the Sandhills Research Park in 16 minutes, 42.79 seconds to lead the Panthers to a 16th place finish in the Class AAAA race. Carolina Forest's McKenzie East raced as an individual in the Class AAAA girls race, finishing 43rd in 20:38.69. Wando won the Class AAAA girls team championship and Lexington took the boys title.

Five Hilton Head runners finished in the top 25 of the Class AAA girls race as the Seahawks took the team win. North Myrtle Beach eighth-grader Benjamin Jenerette paced all local runners, finishing in 19:43.86 to take 12th. Myrtle Beach's Paige Cox was 40th in 20:58.5. North Myrtle Beach was 15th overall in the 24-team field. Myrtle Beach was 20th, St. James was 23rd and Socastee was 24th.

Myrtle Beach's Jonathan Iseman was the fastest local runner in the Class AAA boys race. He finished in 17:49.70 to take 44th, and Georgetown's Sammy Livingston was 46th in 17:51.60 and Benjamin Grant was 51st. Socastee was led by Patrick Gardiner, who finished 56th. Hiton Head placed three runners in the top five to sweep the Class AAA titles.

Myrtle Beach was 18th overall, followed by Georgetown and Socastee to round out the top 20. St. James was 24th.

Green Sea Floyds finished 10th overall in the 17-team Class A boys race, paced by William Buffkin, who finished in 23rd in 18:49.83. Carvers Bay was 17th, led by Seth Legette, who finished in 24:42.18 for 107th.

Aynor was 15th in Class AA, led by Haley Haseldon, who finished in 21:38.37. Andrews finished 12th in the 24-team Class AA boys meet. Jordan Hunt and Jaz Greene finished in the top 35 as Waccamaw placed 16th overall, and Aynor was 24th.

Landrum won both the Class A boys and Class AA/A girls races.
