Flyers top Lightning, but lose star Gagne

PHILADELPHIA | Mike Richards and Jeff Carter scored two goals apiece and rookie David Laliberte and Scott Hartnell also tallied for the Flyers as Philadelphia beat the Tampa Bay Lightning 6-2 on Monday.

The Flyers' excitement over their victory was offset by the news that star winger Simon Gagne will miss six to eight weeks. He is scheduled to have hernia and hip surgery on today.

(At) New York Islanders 3, Edmonton 1 | Brendan Witt posted his first two-goal game in the NHL, veteran forward Doug Weight added two assists and the Islanders stretched their winning streak to a season-high four games with a victory over the Oilers.

Witt, a defenseman in his 14th NHL season,has netted only 25 in his 862-game career and had gone 92 contests since his previous goal on Jan. 22, 2008, at Carolina.
