Waccamaw girls tennis to play for state title

SUMTER -- | In what has largely become a winner-take all matchup, Waccamaw defeated Bishop England 4-3 on Friday in the Class AA Lower State girls tennis final at Palmetto Tennis Center in Sumter.

With the match knotted at 3-3, the Warriors' Casey Altman rebounded from an earlier loss at No.3 singles, teaming with Toley Rice at No. 1 doubles and rolling past the Bishops' (17-4) Madison Boales and Shannon McMannus 6-0, 6-1.

Waccamaw (12-5), which was playing in its ninth-straight Lower State final, will face Emerald, which defeated Woodruff 6-0 in the Upper State final, today at 10 a.m. in the state championship.

The Trojans battled, but came up short in the end, falling to Raptors in the Class A Lower State final at the Palmetto Tennis Center in Sumter.

The Raptors opened with wins at Nos. 1 and 2 singles, but the Trojans (10-4) won the rest of the singles matches, keyed by senior Emily Hickman's win a No. 3 and senior Leah Buffkin's win at No. 5, before Academic Magnet won both doubles matches to clinch the match.

Academic Magnet will face the winner for Friday's Upper State final between Christ Church and Landrum today at 10 a.m.

Christ Church has won three of four Class A state titles since the start of Class A-only playoff brackets in 2005.

Men's college basketball

| Coastal's men's basketball team will hold a preseason intrasquad scrimmage today at Kimbel Arena before the football game against Gardner-Webb.

The scrimmage, at 10 a.m., is the team's final public workout before next Friday's season opener.

Pro golf

| Luke Hart of Blythewood shot a 3-under-par 69 in Thursday's final round to win an NGA Hooters Tour Carolina Winter Series event at Aberdeen Country Club.
