Pelicans snag all-star game

In the immediate aftermath of acquiring the Myrtle Beach Pelicans, managing partner Chuck Greenberg was asked if, at some point, the team wanted the opportunity to host the annual All-Star Game between the Carolina League and the California League.

"Absolutely," Greenberg said. "That's something we very much want to do."

It sure didn't take very long.

Greenberg confirmed Friday that the Pelicans will announce Monday they will host the 2008 All-Star Game at Coastal Federal Field for the first time in franchise history.

"We're so excited for all of our fans and our franchise," Greenberg said. "This is truly going to be a showcase for our franchise and for the community of Myrtle Beach."

The game, which pits the best players from two of the three advanced Class A leagues, alternates sites between the Carolina League and the California League. Last season, the Salem Avalanche hosted the game at Salem Memorial Stadium. This year's game is scheduled for June 19 in Stockton, Calif.
