save the dates: brew events on tap

1554 Enlightened Ale now available at Hanging Ten in Surfside Beach

1554 Enlightened Ale

The Grand Strand’s Beer Renaissance continues.

Remember Mike Shank of Festival Promotions? He’s the guy who basically ran the Weekly Surge inaugural Myrtle Beach Beer Fest back in March, which rocked my world, mostly due to the unlimited two-ounce samples.

Good news: Shank has been working on more beer-related events. Here’s what he's told me so far:

• This fall, he’s putting on an Oktoberfest, with German beers and Oktoberfest seaonsals from craft brewers. The plan is to have free admission and fest-goers will pay by-the-beer. Stay tuned for the exact date, time and location.

• Shank also plans a Winterfest beer event, to be held during the Martin Luther King holiday weekend in January. (MLK Day will be Monday, Jan. 18.) The set up will be like last March’s inaugural beer fest, with an admisison fee. Well, there’s one difference: Shank said he will have a big tent with heaters inside.

• And the second annual Myrtle Beach Beer Fest will be held on Saturday, March 27. Shank might add a wine event on the Friday evening before the beer fest.

Stay tuned for more details on these three events, and rejoice in the expanding beer culture on the Grand Strand.

Hanging a Fat Tire

Hanging Ten Beach Bar & Grill is a long drive from my house, but I have some reasons to make a return visit soon.

I had heard that Hanging Ten, located at 1610 U.S. 17 South in Surfside Beach, recently added three new beers from New Belgium Brewing Co. in Fort Collins, Colo. I called up and found out that, indeed, Hanging Ten is now carrying Fat Tire Amber Ale, 1554 Enlightened Black Ale, and Mothership Wit Organic Wheat Beer. Each of these beers has received either a B or B-plus rating from the authoritative BeerAdvocate.com.

Another good reason to visit, if you’re a vodka drinker like me: $2 house vodka from 4 p.m. to midnight Mondays through Wednesdays.

While I’m at it, Hanging Ten recently announced new hours: 11 a.m.-2 a.m., Monday-Friday; noon-midnight Saturday; and closed Sunday.

supporting the troops

Here’s some patriotism for you: Beer and pizza, born on the Fourth of July.

MillerCoors has decided to donate 8,000 cases of beer to U.S. troops in the Middle East, according to BizJournals.com

The beers – all 192,000 of them – will be shipped in time for the troops to celebrate Independence Day. No word on whether those brewskies will remain chilled on the way over.

The donation is being made through Pizzas 4 Patriots, a nonprofit which will send 25,000 pizzas from Pizzeria Uno along with cases of Coors Light and Miller Lite.

The beer and pizza is scheduled to be loaded onto a DHL jet at John F. Kennedy International Airport this weekend. DHL, a shipping company, is another corporate sponsor of Pizzas 4 Patriots.

MillerCoors is a joint venture formed last year that combined U.S. brewing operations for Molson Coors Brewing Co. and SABMiller PLC, according to Bizjournals.com
