the locale| Murphy's Law, Carolina Forest

-

the lowdown | We were down at the post office in Carolina Forest mailing Christmas cards to Tom Brokaw's office when we overheard a couple locals talking about a new Murphy's Law that had just opened up down the street. "A Murphy's Law in Carolina Forest?" we thought; "How could we have not known about this? Are they trying to keep it a secret?" With clipboard in hand, we drove the truck a couple blocks down to check it out.

If the new location is indeed intended to be a secret, it isn't a very well-kept one. This was illustrated by the fact that we pulled up and had to go on a scavenger hunt to find a vacant parking space. First impressions upon entering didn't really heavily contrast what we had expected to walk into, although it did feel a bit more modern or updated than some of the other locations that we'd visited. It also felt like it may have been a little bit cleaner, though that is probably just because it's so new. Aside from that, it's your typical Murphy's Law-style sports tavern, and a damn good one at that. One thing this place has working in its advantage compared to so many other sports bars in the area is its bar games. While the joint features darts as well as some of your other favorites, pool is the Law's recreational pastime. There are (at the very least) six pool tables strewn about on the left side of the room, conveniently decreasing the amount of time you have to wait for a game. Another thing that makes this place really cool is the fact that each booth gets its own HD screen, and who doesn't enjoy their own HD screen? Besides these two attributes, though, it's pretty much your typical sports bar. Sports jerseys and light-up beer displays on the walls, HD screens tuned to ESPN, college football packages - you know the routine. Sports bars are almost always designed according to the laws of simplicity, and Murphy's Law is no exception. The place is pretty much all one room that is divided into two areas. On the left you have your booths with the screens, the bar games, and some other tables and chairs; and on the other side you have the bar, which is so large it pretty much just takes up that whole half of the room. In addition to being an enormous oval-shaped apparatus that is unlikely to ever run out of assless chairs, it is also made out of wood, just like the floor upon which it sits.

During Happy Hour at Murphy's Law, one can enjoy 40-cent wings, oysters, and peel-'n'-eat shrimp.

Tips | The oysters are delicious; order some. Happy Hour is from 4-7p.m. Monday through Friday.

Find it | Drive down Carolina Forest Boulevard past Kroger and Piggly Wiggly, turn left onto Postal Way, drive a few yards past Carolina Forest Family Medicine, look left. Call 742-5659.
