Missed the News?

We’ve got you covered with this recap of the week’s headlines:

-

is the market common next?

While haters seem to get joy out of local projects that fail and have pointed their cynical fingers at the upscale Market Common development on the former Myrtle Beach Air Force Base as the next domino to fall, news surfaced this week that the shopping/entertainment/residential district’s financial partner has defaulted on its loan agreements and may explore bankruptcy proceedings. Meanwhile, as the recession continues, several of The Market Common’s tenants have asked for rent relief, and at least three of the development’s businesses – Carlyle & Co., Victoria’s Secret and Bath and Body Works – have talked about closing up shop.

put out the fire

Remember that big-ass wildfire that destroyed more than 70 homes off of the S.C. 31 corridor, bringing the Myrtle Beach area into the national media spotlight (the kind of publicity that makes local tourism boosters grit their teeth)? Well, forestry officials officially – and finally – declared the fire out on Wednesday morning. “Due to recent weather and the success of the containment measures which have been in place since late April, the South Carolina Forestry Commission has declared the entire Highway 31 Fire site in Horry County to be controlled,’’ Scott A. Hawkins, Public Information Officer for the S.C. Forestry Commission said via e-mail. “Until now this fire was considered contained, meaning there was the potential for hot spots, flare-ups and re-burns within the 36-mile perimeter.  SCFC fire managers have determined there is no substantial heat being generated within the containment area. In short, the fire is officially ‘out’."
