Podpicks for July 30, 2009

- for Weekly Surge

This week the guest Pod Picks chair is occupied by Gator 107.9’s morning co-host Brian “JD” Sims who recommends the following tracks for downloading (legally, of course) to your iPod or other personal media device.

“Brand New Day” by Joshua Radin – Currently in the top 10 plays in my iPod. I have always said that I like any song that makes it to the soundtrack of “One Tree Hill” or “Grey’s Anatomy,” although not a fan of either one of those shows. If you have a chance to download of any of Radin’s music you will find tones that are vintage, throwbacks to Simon and Garfunkel, with the same soft whispering voice that can ease any soul after a hard day or wrap up the plot of your favorite television show. As a guitarist, I love the cleaver string coordination that is reminiscent of ’80s era Michael Penn and Indigo Girls.

“Zombies Ate My Neighbor” by Single File – The lyrics of this song play like a movie for the mind. It’s a story of love and heartbreak, all built around a plot of dangerous zombies looking for the next feast. “She stole my heart/I’ll being taking hers with a long dart now.” I must say that every girl I’ve every mourned over, it’s a little less painful to assume she never had a heart in the first place. Single File does a brilliant job of explaining heartbreak through imagination. Of course, she’s a zombie that explains everything. Download this entire album, it’s a delight.

“Welcome to the Future” by Brad Paisley … is locked in my iPod and this is the latest song from his “American Saturday Night” CD. It’s a departure from Paisley’s usual ballads about love and quirky songs about the Internet, to discuss the progression of society. Moved by the recent election of President Obama, Paisley sings of a time when his African- American football teammate had a cross burned on his yard for asking out the white homecoming queen. It’s a perfect collection of melody and rhythm that puts our progress as a country in perspective. “Welcome to the Future”… we’ve finally arrived.

You can catch JD on the “Gator Morning Show” from 6 a.m. to 10 a.m. weekdays on WGTR, 107.9 FM.
