Podpicks for October 22, 2009
This week Travis Clark, lead singer/rhythm guitarist of Florida-based power pop act We the Kings which is part of the Glamour Kills tour coming to the House of Blues tonight, occupies the Pod Picks guest chair and recommends three of his favorite tracks which you can download (legally, of course) to your iPod or other personal media device.
"The Middle" by Jimmy Eat World - I remember the first time ever seeing this music video. It's a show/party setting with people stripping down to their underwear. As I watched it for the first time, I recall saying to myself "I absolutely HAVE to start a band!" The song is about a boy and girl who are trying to convince each other not to conform to the standard and what everybody else thinks is "right." Jim Adkins was a key player in the We The Kings' song writing.
"Here Comes the Sun" by The Beatles - Growing up in a family of Beatles fanatics, I was taught almost every song by them from my momma when I was learning guitar. This song is special because we all live in Florida so we get really awesome sunrises and sunsets. I grew really attached to this song in middle school because no matter how bad of a day I had I knew that in the morning, the sun would come up and it wouldn't be the end of the world.
"Styrofoam Plates" by Death Cab for Cutie - One of the best written songs by Ben Gibbard, in my opinion. It talks about a father who was absent, due to alcohol abuse, and didn't support his family. When he passed away everyone realized that he was "not quite the father, but the donor of seeds." Even though I had a really great upbringing and childhood, it made me realize the real world is not always so peachy. Plus let's be honest, Ben Gibbard just married Zooey Deschanel ... ha-ha that rules.
- You can catch Travis Clark with We the Kings, along with Hey Monday, The Friday Night Boys and headliners All Time Low tonight at House of Blues. Doors open at 6 tonight, music starts at 7. Tickets are $20.50. House of Blues is at 4640 U.S. 17 S., Barefoot Landing, North Myrtle Beach. Call 272-3000 or visit www.houseofblues.com.
