OK, so this isn't New York or L.A., or even Miami or Chicago.
But there's still plenty going on along the Grand Strand that doesn't involve Calabash seafood and country line dancing. So we don't want to hear "I'm so bored - there's nothing to do around here!"
Here's something cool to do that proves that beyond the neon and beachwear stores, the Strand has some culture to offer: Atlantic Stage, a newly-formed local professional theater company, unveils the curtain on its 2009-2010 season with a production of David Auburn's "Proof" opening tonight at its 79th Avenue North theater (former home of the Academy of the Arts, Sciences and Technology).
"Proof" is one of the most-celebrated plays in recent Broadway history, having nabbed a Tony Award and a Pulitzer Prize. The plot - which sounds kind of geeky as it revolves around a family of mathematicians - explores "the complex formulas of love, trust and feat that bind a family together, for better or worse," according to a press release.
You might be familiar with the big screen adaptation of "Proof,'' which stars Gwyneth Paltrow, Anthony Hopkins and Jake Gyllenhaal, and was released in theaters in 2005.
The opening performance is set for 7:30 tonight. Additional performances of "Proof'' are slated for 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday and Nov. 12-14, Nov. 19-21 and 3 p.m. Nov. 15 and Nov. 22.
Tickets are $15-$25 at the door, or available in advance via www.atlanticstage.com or by calling 877-287-8587.
The Atlantic Stage black box theater is at 900 79th Avenue N., Myrtle Beach.
