"Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen"

- for Weekly Surge

Say what you want about Michael Bay, but nobody does action mixed with sappy sentimentality better. "Bad Boys," "Armageddon," "Pearl Harbor" and the prequel to this blockbuster back in 2007 - all have action so big you sprain your eyes trying to catch it all, laced with tender moments that Bay uses to make his characters a little less flat. Does he succeed? Well, yes and no. Bay has never been able to film complex characters in conflict - there are no actor-driven scenes that work in any movie he has ever directed. What he does do is something that will never be considered as art but something just as valid - entertainment. Entertaining is exactly what his latest in the misadventures of morphing Hasbro toys is - one action scene after another, whirlwinds of color and metallic sheen. If everyone could just stop watching Bay's films so closely, they might start to get it. Stop looking for the banality of the plots. Stop expecting Megan Fox and Josh Duhamel to offer something else besides eye candy. Stop thinking Shia LeBeouf is better than these movies. Just sit back, turn off your mind and let the pretty colors put you in a daze for two hours. If you can just watch it for what it is and not what you think it should be - you will realize that both of the "Transformer movies have been a blast to watch" - an exercise in fun. "Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen" is not more than meets the eye but it is pleasing to the eye, so give it a rent.
