Family proud of dad's work

Lilly Smith and her daughter Faith remembered the heart of their family on Memorial Day, as did so many others in the area. Doyce W. Smith, husband to Lilly and father to Faith, has been deployed as a team instructor/international police officer for the past 19 months.

Community cranks up creativity

The Carolina Forest area was alive with examples of creativity this week. Carolina Forest Elementary School provided a terrific example of making lemonade out of lemons. Disappointment at having to attend school on Memorial Day to make up a wildfire-related absence turned into a celebration of the real meaning of the day.

This cook has a real taste for adventure

Meet Hamid Ender of Spring Lake, and you can feel the energy radiating from him like a force field. You'll find Hamid, 49, behind the counter of his Greek restaurant most hours of the day, most days of the week. He always seems to be in motion: talking to construction workers and golfers, cooking souvlaki or making tzatziki sauce for gyros, or cleaning. He seems like a man comfortable and content with who he is and what he does.

  • Memorial Day at the Bay

Most children spend Memorial Day at the beach or at the neighborhood pool. Not so for Carolina Forest and North Myrtle Beach students this year.

  • A mother's love endures

What do you remember most about your mother? Is it the delicious meals she made that filled your hungry stomach? Is it the motherly advice she offered when everyone else's brought no solution to the problem? Is it for all of the things she did that went unnoticed and even un-thanked? When she didn't do them, it just didn't get done. Abraham Lincoln once said, "I remember my mother's prayers and they have always followed me. They have clung to me all my life."
